Learn How To Play Bass Scales Underneath Chords
You can be just one of two kinds of bass players. The first type basically plays root notes and a couple of chords and never actually develops in his bass playing. The second type knows how you can correctly use bass scales underneath chords and can usually come up with fresh thoughts about what to play. Which type are you?
If you happen to be a bass player you know about playing the root note of what ever chord the guitar player is performing. You also may have figured out how to play the triads; or the 3 notes that comprise the chord the band is playing. Nothing wrong with learning and using those but they are really just the building blocks to what really proficient bassists do which would be to play bass scales underneath guitar chords.
If you are using three note chords,or triads, you happen to be really playing notes from either a major or a minor scale. These two scales happen to be a very good place to begin. Bear in mind that even though a tune could be in the key of G, when your players shift to the C chord you should be using a C scale, either major or minor, not continue using a G scale. Even though the notes are almost all the same, the secret to this will be to at minimum get started with thinking in scales per chord.
It might be simpler to think only about five note scales at first. They are usually referred to as pentatonic scales. We have a pentatonic major and a pentatonic minor scale. The pentatonic scales will be the three notes that make up the chord plus two additional notes. When the middle note in the chord is a major note you'd be using the major pentatonic scale, when the middle note is a minor note you would be using the minor pentatonic scale. You might also use the minor pentatonic scale underneath seventh chords, but we will go into that in a different write-up.
Permit me to give you an illustration. Your guitar player is using a C major chord. These notes are C, E, and G. The most effective pentatonic scale to play beneath this chord will be the major which is C, D, E, G. A. Just five notes. If your guitar player is using a C minor chord that is C, E flat, and G; you would probably play the minor pentatonic scale which is C, E flat, F, G, and B flat.
When you have learned the two main basic pentatonic scales, the next stage with your playing should be to master both the total major scale and the entire minor scale. Each one of these scales will always sound right beneath particular chords. Always remember that anytime you play pentatonic scales, it does not matter what key the tune is in, only what chord is being used at that time, which establishes which scale you should be playing.
Use these types of simple scales beneath guitar chords when you play and you'll start to discover endless new options for your bass playing.
