Compatible media types include plain paper, bond, envelopes and labels. The standard paper tray can handle media sizes such as letter, legal, executive, A6, A5, A4, B5 and B6. The multi-purpose tray can additionally work with custom sizes from 2.75 inches x 4.57 inches to 8.5 inches x 14.0 inches.
There's a memory of 64MB already installed. But a 144-pin S0-DIMM expansion slot is available that allows you to increase the memory size up to 512MB (sold separately). There are a total of 66 scalable fonts, 12 bitmap fonts and 13 bar codes included with the PCL 6 printer language emulation used.
In hooking up this printer to a network, there's the integrated 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet port. A hi-speed USB 2.0 port is also provided for use with a single computer. Thanks to this fitted USB port, it's possible to directly print PDF and JPEG files directly from a USB flash memory without switching on the computer. What's more, photos found in a PictBridge-enabled digital camera can also be printed by plugging it in.
Bundled with the machine upon purchase are starter toners (black, yellow, cyan and magenta). The black toner can yield as many as 2500 pages with 5 percent coverage, while the rest can yield as many as 1500 pages each with 5 percent coverage. Genuine Brother toners may be obtained both from land-based and online printer consumables sellers.
Weighing 64.2 lb and measuring only 16.5" (width) x 18.7" (depth) x 12.5" (height), the Brother HL-4040CN printer with MFC-4040CN toner, has a compact form.
