In This Canon 60d Test, It Took Three Storms To Create This Short Footage
I used my favorite DSLR to do this this test, the 60d. The theme of this dark time-lapse is the zombie Apocalypse. The idea was to go from day to the black of a stormy day, almost like night. This footage is part of my new zombie movie, so I was not really doing a Canon 60d test.
But let me turn the table again and call it a Canon 60d test: any time lapse is like a test, the photographer is at the mercy of the elements. Why is this? Creating a time lapse is an uncertain art, and you never know what the result will be. Its the surprise effect that I like which makes it fun. Obviously you know what you want, but the end result has always surprised me.
Darkness and danger is descending upon the town in this Canon 60d test, it like the approaching apocalypse. Will the Zombie infection take root in our homes? Yes!
This test is made of pure raw footage. There are no fades, filters, or effects, its right out of the camera, I just slapped this footage together. In camera is the way I learned how to do it thirty years ago when effects were very expensive and difficult. Putting the footage through effects generators just does not look the same as when you do the effects in camera. This is the old school way. So what does the old rule say? It says what you can do in camera, than do it in the camera. This Canon 60d test needed three storms to create. It takes a lot of patience and time to do this kind of work. Just look at the evil atmosphere moving in over the rooftops, all it really took was getting the right manual aperture.
YouTube is great but its not full HD, and very compressed so the quality is way below the original footage. Of course the end product is going to look awesome on a big screen. Pay attention to the nasty time lapse flicker. Since you don't know what you are getting, every time lapse is like a Canon 60d test. The strange thing is that sometimes you get flicker, sometimes you don't. But one way of reducing the annoying flicker is to use one exposure for every one second interval, this will give you the smoothest look.
The problem is the DSLR camera I think, but don’t ask me why, and also the fact that light is actually changing every second, but our eyes can not perceive these changes, when the camera can. This is not a bad Canon 60d test, but the file is compressed, the blacks are noisy, and later, in the fished product, I would match the colors, contrast, and brightness, and crush the blacks a, but you get the idea.
