Call Of Duty Games, Way More Interesting, Maybe A Little Less Exciting
What might be wrong with Call of Duty games? Nothing really. Wait a second, come to think about it, there is something wrong with MW 3. Its the time frame. I can play through it quick, which sucks for a game I love so much. Now we are paying a lot of money for a game that is done in about 14 hours.
When looking at games like Skyrim, which is essentially an FPS combined with RPG, it will take you 200 hours to finish the main story lines.
And because of its Creation engine, which has a very advanced AI that gives randomness like real life to NPCs, and its free roaming capability, you will have thousands of hours of game-play waiting for you.
Lets say the player in Skyrim wants to stay away from the main quest line. This is easily done. There is always something to do no matter where you go in the game.
I have the feeling that Call of Duty games are getting shorter and shorter. Like all products that see the light of incredible success the Modern Warfare series is more about putting the product out as quickly as you can, it was not long ago the Black OPs appeared. Success has forced the developers to think more about money before the player. Modern Warfare 3 is not much different from its predecessor?
The makers of Skyrim have put out a truly innovative game building upon its predecessor: Oblivion. This was not done for Modern Warfare 3, why? I think I know why.
You can break down games into two categories. One is an alley game, the other is an Island game. The Call of Duty games, or FPS, are almost always Alley games. Game boundaries are usually right beside you in alley games creating sometimes a claustrophobic sense.
Island games are sandbox games, like an RPG game, where the boundaries are not immediately perceptible. It will take you a long time to walk from one bounder to the other, and bounders are natural in nature usually a mountain.
So what am I getting at here? Its just an idea, but what if FPS games were created like Island games? This would give the player a lot more play time. I know that Call of Duty is all about multi-player, and or survival mode, and in that is were the hours of play time can be found.
But what I’m getting at is having an FPS game that empowers the player more, so the player can determine the way the game will evolve. Call it a cross-genre fps. Military games that have huge expanses usually are more strategy games, like Flashpoint. Expanding the boundaries would be great for FPS, and it doesn't have to be RPG, but imagine been able to expand and build on your combat skills to become a super solider?
Hold on. Obviously alley games are scripted way easier, and thus heightens the drama of the game play. I still love MW 2 and 3. FPS alley style is fun. I just think it is time to start thinking outside the box for once, before we have to fork out another 70 dollars.
In the end I prefer to play Skyrim, as its combat mode is still FPS. I would suggest you do get the Call of Duty games, and make sure you get Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and 3. They are a lot of fun
