Bucket Truck - Tips for Reducing Electrical Hazards

They are not trained electricians; yet, they routinely work near energized power lines typically in the darkness of night.
The safety guidelines outlined beneath are primarily for "non-electrical" bucket truck operators. Nevertheless, the general principles of safety apply to all workers who are likely to face electrical hazards, such as construction employees on scaffolds near electrical cables, while at work. The guidelines consist of safety standards established by various regulatory agencies such as OSHA and NIOSH.
* If you use tools that increase your reach, the minimum distance you need to maintain from utility lines must be greater than the longest extension of the tool.
* Prior to starting work, check insulation barriers and equipment for wear. Do not work with equipment that is wet, has dirt on it, or shows signs of deterioration on the insulation.
* Insulate nearby electrical cables and use approved protective equipment if your work is electrical in nature such as hanging lights or electrical signs.
* Ground workers around the bucket truck must not make physical contact with the truck or any parts of it when it is in use near power lines.
* If the work site is near utility lines, enquire with the utility company to see if they can de-energize the lines or install protective insulation over them.
* Always treat utility cables as if they are energized and do not touch them with your hands.
* All electrical tools and equipment must have the correct rating for the job at hand.
* Check and make sure that the bucket is adequately insulated if you are going to be working around electrical cables.
* You must ensure all your equipment to prevent the creation of accidental paths to ground even if the bucket of the truck is insulated.
* Keep a distance of at least ten feet from all electrical cables. The rule also applies to all equipment and tools.
OSHA calls for non-electrical employees to maintain a distance of 3 feet or more from wires that are insulated and energized with than 300 volts of electricity.
The 3 feet rule reflects OSHA regulations. NIOSH, on the other hand, recommends that workers should maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet from overhead cables of 50kv or less. Above 50kv, NIOSH recommends an additional 0.4 inches for each 1kv over 50.
It is interesting to note that CFR 1926.550(a)(15)(i), which provides for safety distances between rigged loads and power lines, states that the minimum clearance for lines rated at 50KV or lower need to be 10 feet or greater.
The best safety practice is to maintain a distance of at least 10 feet from overhead utility lines since most lines are typically not insulated.
Workers who use bucket trucks face a lot of challenges while performing their job. In addition to electrical safety, operators need training on how to save themselves from falling, deal with inclement weather, position the truck on uneven or rough terrains and manage traffic.
