CFR 1926.550(a)(15)(i) specifies safety regulations for distances between crane & rigged loads and electrical power lines that is more in line with NIOSH's guideline - 10 feet or more for utility lines rated 50kv or less.
Most electrical lines are not insulated. So the best safety practice is to treat all utility wires as live and not to get closer than ten feet to them. Of course, it's essential to take into account all other safety elements and increase the minimum safe distance accordingly.
Workers who use bucket trucks face many challenges while doing their job. In addition to electrical safety, workers require training on how to prevent themselves from falling, deal with inclement weather, position the vehicle on uneven or rough work sites and even manage traffic.
