Bringing Legal Obligations Back In-house? Employ Case Management Software To Lift The Strain On Partners And Employees
As economic conditions continue to be tough, corpoprate counsel are looking to save money by bringing legal work back home. There is a lot of financial sense in this: The Lawyer states that “magic circle” associates today receive more than partners were in 2005, whereas hourly rates for city law firms are now between £180 and £550 an hour; far higher than the rates of an hour of legal work carried out by in house lawyers.

At the Law Society’s inaugural In House Counsel event last year, there was a very interesting debate about “Ensuring effective use of legal resources and reducing costs”. One of the speakers was talking about the advantages of returning work to in-house teams, saying that it allowed teams to deliver a best value service to their organizations, bring their insider expertise to bear on a wider range of cases and tackle the complex cases. The importance of this thought should not be overlooked – suitably developed staff are the staff that remain with your organization.
The manner of returning legal work in-house should ideally be handled sensitively, however. You may be aware of the Yerkes-Dodson law which says that over a certain level, the more strain someone is subjected to the less well they perform.
Is Legal Work Worth Doing In-house?
The Association of Corporate Counsel is flagging that it is one of the most significant trends in the last ten years, showing that lots of companies think it has lots to offer. Case management software can do much both to free staff from background tasks and make the process of insourcing less painful.
Matter management software and case management systems offer huge advantages to in-house teams including:
- increased collaboration between in-house staff and exterior agencies
- enable home working if required
- greater insight into the progress of a matter or case
