International Removals: Tips On What to Do If Your Shipment Gets Damaged
Let us say that you have packed your belongings and contracted a service provider that specializes in international removals to ship your items to your new residence in some other nation. While your belongings are in transit, you head to your new home to ready it for the arrival of your shipment.
But when your shipment arrives, you see that the packaging material sustained some damage. Oh no! Are your belongings inside damaged? If they are, what kind of damage have they sustained? Here are recommended tips to follow in case this happens.
1. Before signing off the freight receipt, make sure that you inspect the packaging. If possible, open the box to inspect the items inside for nicks, scuffs, scratches, and abrasions. Keep in mind that big and heavy objects are more susceptible to damage than smaller ones.
2. Check too if there are missing parts. This is especially important when the shipped object is modular and you have disassembled it before vehicle shipping.
3. In some rare cases, the item may malfunction due to a manufacturer's defect which was "activated" as it was shipped. If so, you can ask the international removal company for help. Many shippers have connections to product manufacturers and may help find a solution to your problem.
4. If your package exhibits signs of damage, write "package damaged" on the freight receipt when you sign it off. Keep the copy of the receipt with you; this would be required in case you need to file a damage claim. It is also a good idea to take photos of the damage. These could be used as evidence.
5. Do not throw away the packaging. Keep it with you because it may be used to investigate the claim.
6. If the package shows significant damage, you may refuse to accept the shipment. Write "refused due to damage" on the freight receipt and inform your shipper. Use the freight receipt to file a damage claim from the international mover. Take photos of the damage; these could be used as evidence when you lay claim.
