The Pontiac Catalina 1963 Was Ahead of its Class in Style, Luxury

It’s uncommon for one model of U.S. automobile to burst ahead of the others. But, occasionally there are exceptions when totally innovative body styles and high-powered engines set some makes of vehicle apart, and one such car was the Pontiac Catalina 1963.

There were seven different models of 1963 Catalina made from among the total of 235,000 Catalina’s Pontiac manufactured that year. Each of those seven models had memorable features that even today remain distinctive.

First-look observations of the ’63 Pontiac Catalina, primarily because of its luxury and style, were those of instant approval. Other distinguishing characteristics included upward curving taillights and recessed split grilles. Other visual features included full-length body moldings and what looked to be unusually small hubcaps.

Factory prices for the beautiful car ranged from $2,725 for the two-door sedan to $3,300 for the convertible. Among the seven models offered to the public, Pontiac manufactured more four-door sedans, at 80,000 vehicles, than any of the other versions. The factory price of a four-door sedan was $2,795.

One thing that made the ‘63 Catalina so popular in addition to its great looks and power was the fact they were marketed in the same price range as Chevy Impalas, Ford Galaxies, and the Dodge 880.

Truly, engines beneath hoods of the ’63 were among the biggest and strongest of that day. With a wheelbase of 120”, some versions were equipped with high-powered 389 cubic inch engines known to produce 410 horsepower. Because of the high speeds these cars consistently reached in short periods of time, suggestions on the street were made that the 389 could produce 500 or even 550 horsepower of thrust.

And is wasn’t as if Pontiac didn’t already have a legacy of power leading into the 1963 Catalina, which was the most powerful model yet, because models during the previous two years had met with great successes both at NASCAR races and on drag strips.
