5 Tips for Insuring Your College-Aged Kids
Paying car insurance for a college student can be expensive if you don’t know how to cut down on the costs. You have several options as a parent to keep your children’s car insurance costs as low as possible. You don’t have to pay extremely high rates just for the privilege of insuring your college-aged students when they drive.
1.) Check with your insurance agent to see if your auto insurance company offers an option for you to designate your child as an infrequent driver. If your child goes to college a certain number of miles away from home and doesn’t drive, you may be able to save a significant amount of money on insurance premiums. When your child comes home for the holidays, call your insurance agent and let him know. When he leaves to return to college, call him back and say your child has left. Each company has a different minimum number of miles from home the child must attend college if it offers this option. Some companies may require only that your child be home for more than 30 days for him to be a regular, frequent driver.
2.) Encourage your child to keep up her grades. When her grades are good, you can usually receive a discount on your auto insurance. Each company offering this kind of discount requires a different GPA, but it is usually very achievable.
3.) Buy a newer, larger vehicle for your child. The newer the car, the lower the insurance rates. The car doesn’t have to be brand new, but if it is a few years old, and not a sports car or convertible, you can get a better rate than if it is a red hot rod from the 1960’s. Certain colors mean more money in insurance premiums.
4.) Buy a car that has security features such as an alarm system and air bags. The more security features the car has, the less you must pay in car insurance premiums.
5.) Ask for a discount from your insurance agent if your child lives close to school and works close to where she lives. The closer she is to where she goes to school and works, the lower your insurance premiums may be.
When you are aware of all of the possible discounts you can get for your college-aged child on his auto insurance, you can save a lot of money each year in premiums. Encourage your child to drive safely and to avoid getting tickets, as they also increase the amount of money you pay in insurance.
