Guitar Hero Shows People How to Play The Drums
Video games sure have advanced since the old days of Asteroids and all the old favorites of yesterday. Who could have imagined decades ago that a video game would be used to learn new skills?
Rock Band is not only a game that is fun to do, but it has been said by Harmonix Music that if you can play the Rock Band drum set on the 'hard' setting, you should be able to play the drums for real! Question is though are you really drumming, or just copying the pattern you see on the screen? If you are able to play along with the video game, that does not translate into the real world and does not mean you will be able to play a real drum kit. To play real drums you need to be able to read music. which you won't learn playing a game; excellent coordination and rhythm. If you can't read sheet music you may never be able to be in a band unless you are musically gifted and have the instincts to know what to play. Most bands these days no longer use electronic drum kits such as were popular in the 80's. Real drums give the musician creativity over the volume, pitch and duration of the drum note and cymbals.
At least your real drum kit will never need is Guitar Hero World Tour cymbal cable, because there are no cables that are too short and breaks all the time.
Even a small drum kit is far more advanced than the Guitar Hero or Rock Band drum kit. For those wanting to make the switch, I'm sure the mental image of a real drum kit is a little scary! Just think about sitting on stage with your drums, knowing that you are responsible for setting the rhythm for your band and they all rely on you. If you get to that point you must be a good drummer, but for a novice even the Rock Band drum kit can be too much.
Learning drumming starts with knowing have to keep the beat. If you can keep rhythm, can you play the drums? Not necessarily. Skilled drummers need to add to songs with their skills as well as just setting the rhythm for the band else to follow. You may not always notice the drums, but if you were to take them out of the song I think you would notice for sure!
Can Rock Band games actually teach how to play drums? Doubtful, but it can't hurt to practice. Get comfortable with the drums through the Playstation game, practice counting the beat, and you are on your way to stardom! Make sure you pick up a replacement Guitar Hero cable before one breaks!
