I don't like the word quit when using it in regards to electronic cigarette use, wrote Sam, an e cigarette user.
He was commenting on the Facebook wall of Unstoppable, the EU campaign to stop smoking.
Sam is a member of a new social group, with a new habit - and a vocabulary that didn't exist until a few short years ago.
Sam is a vaper, a person who vapes. The word is taken from the action of using an electronic cigarette (or personal vaping device), a device which vaporizes nicotine containing liquid (e-juice).
In contrast to tobacco cigarettes (analogues) no combustion takes place. This distinction is crucial, say supporters of tobacco harm reduction, as most of the damage of smoking is caused not by the nicotine, nor by tobacco, but via the action of burning tobacco.
Quitting or Switching?
The device has caused immense debate.
Tobacco harm reduction enthusiasts and scientists have embraced the device, while some anti-smoking groups fear that it will threaten the denormalisation of smoking - and the groups funding from the nicotine cessation industry.
Needless to say, tobacco companies have come out against the device.
One key distinction which has been argued over is whether the device is a way to quit tobacco cigarettes, or simply an alternative for smokers who can't or don't want to quit.
If it leads to quitting, then the device may not be marketed to smokers without years of trials. The device would effectively be removed from the market for a number of years.
Surveys in both the US and the UK suggest that approximately two-thirds of smokers would return to cigarettes. With an estimated 1,300,000 vapers in the two countries, that would be a massive boost to the tobacco industry.
However, if the device is simply an alternative to regular cigarettes, it falls in a legal no-mans land, and can continue to be marketed by the small independent companies that have sprung up in the few short years since the e-cigarettes invention.
So which is it - a way to quit, or a superior alternative to cigarettes?
The vaping community itself is split on the issue.
Some maintain they are no longer smokers. However Sam, at least, is rather clear on the issue. On the Facebook wall of Unstoppable, he states:
I know for a fact that if I am caught without a charged battery or eliquid I WILL go to the local and pick up a pack of Analogues [tobacco cigarettes].
