Tips for Understanding What Solid-State Electronics Are
The majority of modern electronic products contain solid-state electronics. But what are they?
Circuits or devices built from only solid materials are known as solid-state electronics. The charge is confined entirely within these solid materials, which are engineered to switch and amplify it. These solid-state devices are commonly a component of printed circuit boards.

The current is composed of positively charged electron holes and negatively charged ions in the solid material. The form and function of the solid state devices is determined by the interactions of the electron holes and the electrons.
Solid-State Semiconductors
Conductivity varies in the solid materials located in the solid-state devices. The most common semiconductor materials are silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide.
The way the semiconductor materials behave can easily become manipulated by impurities within the material’s structure as they are introduced. The introduction of a magnetic or electric field can changed the conductivity, along with any exposure to heat or light. Thermionic devices (vacuum tubes), which were used in the past, are much more difficult to work than these solid-state devices.
Before solid-state electronics were invited the charge within a circuit was controlled by vacuum tubes. Unlike solid-state devices, vacuum tubes created a large amount of heat and had to be replaced regularly. Aside from this, they were large and bulky. For example, the largely oversized televisions and radios of the past needed to be that size in order to handle vacuum tubes and their circuitry. Once solid-states devices were introduced, electronics quickly became much smaller. A single microprocessor chip can have billions of microscopic transistors on it as a result of today’s high-tech innovations. If these advancements in technology had never come about then the printed circuit would not be in existence.

Since 1947, when the transistor was first invented, the amount of solid-state devices which are widely available for design and production have continued to rise. Here is sample of some of the most common:

What the Future of Electronics May Look Like

Touch screens, photovoltaic and flexible devices are examples of tomorrow’s technology we have already begun using today. The technology of tomorrow will continue to be defined by breakthroughs in solid-state technology.
