Science And Technology Scholarships Bring Students Online Course Program Success

Students from St. Lucia and throughout the world have a better chance at becoming the next Bill Gates or Marie Curie. Monster Worldwide, the global parent company for the monster.com employment site, and the Society of Black Engineers recently announced extending scholarships to students in Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. The Society of Black Engineers scholarship offering was part of a partnership between the organization, a Midwestern technical institute and the charitable fund, Goldman Sachs Gives.

The scholarships are for the students to work toward science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, degrees. A diverse array of STEM degree programs are offered to traditional college, university and technical school students as well as distance learners, who participate in studies remotely. The St. Lucian, European and Canadian scholarship recipients are among those who, degrees in hand, might enter careers that the US Bureau of Labor anticipates are to see faster employment growth than others. Some STEM degree holders might develop network systems or computer software or to develop healthcare products and systems. There are also STEM careers that involve work in areas related to the environment, such as addressing issues related to climate change or working to secure drinking water supplies.

"Having well-qualified individuals in these disciplines to fill the career pipeline is critically important to the future not only of our country and our industry, but also of the world," Monster Worldwide Corporate Philanthropy Vice President Lewis Karabatsos was quoted in a July announcement as saying. Calvin Phelps, National Chair for the National Society of Black Engineers noted that partnerships are what's needed. “After seeing how hungry these students are for the education, it is truly a joy to help fulfill that dream,” Phelps was quoted in a separate announcement as saying.

Both the National Society of Black Engineers and Monster Worldwide also award scholarships to American citizens who want to offset the costs of campus or online degree programs in STEM-related subject areas. In addition, students can apply for scholarships from government agencies, large corporations, non-profit foundations and community and civic groups. There are academic and needs-based scholarships as well as scholarships geared to minorities, women and specific areas of study. A few science, math, technology and engineering scholarships that students might consider:

American citizens interested in pursuing campus or online degrees in STEM subjects might also find scholarship opportunities available from the Society of Black Engineers and Monster Worldwide. Science, math, technology and engineering scholarships can greatly offset the cost of tuition for campus and online degree programs. Students seeking math, science, technology and engineering scholarships might consider:

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program: Each year provides up to $7,500 to 300 sophomores or juniors pursuing careers in engineering, math or the natural sciences. Colleges, universities and technical schools nominate scholarship candidates, who are required to maintain “B” or equivalent grade point averages and be in the upper quarter of their classes. Scholarship assistance can be applied to book purchases and room and board as well as tuition and fees.

Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology: High school students each year can enter research projects in this competition that provides $1,000 to $100,000 in scholarship money. The Siemens Foundation offers the program, and the College Board administers it. Those who win the scholarship competition at the regional level move on to national finals.

Science, technology, math and engineering scholarships for campus and online distance learning programs can help make campus and online degrees in these areas more of a reality for many students. In order for students to obtain science, technology, math and engineering scholarships, they must in many instances apply the assistance to institutions that are accredited by a nationally recognized agency. Once they obtain their science degree, they might enter any number of fields that provide promising futures.
