If, like us, retro chic is your strong reason for visiting, then staying at the Orbit In, an authentically restored 1950s motel, is the way to go.

It's late afternoon when we pull up at the Orbit In after a day's driving from Vegas. We wheel our baggage past a copse of tall palms, through the gate and into an isolated pool yard where time seems to have stood still since circa 1957.

The Orbit In's yard design was considered avant-garde when it was built : it's single-storeyed and flat-roofed, and the nine guestrooms open on to the central pool area. It has been immaculately restored, with the jacuzzi spa and boomerang-shaped bar thoughtful additions. The final effect is devoted to its modern heritage, retro cool but intimate.

Executive Jade welcomes us and his quiet, relaxed manner reinforces the sense of being a guest at somebody's home, not at a hotel. He asserts we have arrived just in time for the Orbitini Hour -- cocktails at the bar beside the saltwater pool. The guest pads have names such as Rat Pack Palm Springs, Eames Studio and the Cha Cha Room. Jade hands us the keys to the Leopard Lounge, which is roomy, with a king-size bed and a cosy sitting area fitted out in retro furnishings. There's a record player and a collection of LPs, vintage film posters on the walls and even a kitchenette with the original baked white enamel all-in-one hotplate-oven-sink and refrigerator. Don and Betty Draper from Nutty Men would feel at home.

Relaxing on the bar stools, sipping our Orbitinis and listening to Sinatra singing in the background, we take in the motel's surprising desert location. The sky is turning a deep blue as the sun sets behind the craggy San Jacinto Mountains, throwing into outline the tall palms that give the town its name. It is so calm. Our 21st-century strains melt away. This is my kinda town.

Several guests are in the Jacuzzi, others spring from their rooms to enjoy an Orbitini or 2. It's a friendly group ; over 50% are Canadians, and the conversation is straightforward. All seem to be enjoying a short break from the cold, and with non-stop flights to Palm Springs from main US and Canadian towns, a long weekend is very achievable.

2 guests from Long Island recommend the eatery at the Palm Springs Tennis Club, just a short stroll off. In reality everything is within walking or cycling distance from the Orbit In. After showering in our pastel pink-tiled, 1950s state-of-the-art loo, we head into the night to find our dinner destination.

We wake up early next morning to brilliant sunlight and blue skies, but the steam rising from the pool attests the requirement for one or two additional layers, though they'll be shed later on. Breakfast is a self-serve selection by the pool. We do not linger ; map in hand, we hop on two of the motel's cruisers and eagerly begin our cycling tour to explore Palm Springs ' modern architectural landmarks,writes tagza.com.
