Is There Something Wrong With Call Of Duty Games
What is the problem with Call of Duty games? Not a whole lot. But there is a but. And when there is a but there is something wrong. The way I see it MW3 is way too short. If you think about MW 3 is very expensive compared to the game play, which can be done it around 14 hours.
When looking at games like Skyrim, which is essentially an FPS combined with RPG, it will take you 200 hours to finish the main story lines.
And because of its free roaming capability, and advanced AI that gives real life and randomness to NPCs, you have thousands of hours of game play waiting for you, and it is a bit cheaper than Call of Duty games.
You do not even have to follow the quest lines, you could even kill key figures who are important for the quest. It does not matter. Because no matter where you go there is always something to do in Skyrim. The player is empowered to get what ever the player wants out of this game.
I have the feeling that Call of Duty games are getting shorter and shorter. I think the phenomenal success of the Modern Warfare series has pushed the developers to think more about money than the player. I ask the question: is Modern Warfare 3 really that different from MW 2?
The makers of Skyrim have put out a truly innovative game building upon its predecessor: Oblivion. For MW3 why wasn't this done? I think I know why.
What are the two kinds of video games that all games fit into? Alley games, and Island games. Call of Duty games are alley games. In an alley game the player is led down a certain constrained path, where game boundaries are usually right beside you.
Boundaries are not immediately perceptible in Island games, and are often referred to as sandbox games, popular for RPGs. It might take you all day to walk to one.
What do I mean? Games like Modern Warfare would be made like Island games that would be way more interesting, maybe a little less exciting, but would increase play time. I know that Call of Duty is all about multi-player, and or survival mode, and in that is were the hours of play time can be found.
FPS game should be made more like Island games, with random battle possibilities outside of the main alley storyline. This would empower the player more, so the player can determine the way the game will evolve. Maybe you could call it a cross-genre RPS. Military games that have huge expanses usually are more strategy games, like Flashpoint. Expanding the boundaries would be great for FPS, and it doesn't have to be RPG, but imagine been able to expand and build on your combat skills to become a super solider?
But wait, do not read this the wrong way. I know that alley style games heighten the drama of the game play, and I love MW 2 and 3. I think they are the best FPS games out there. I just think it is time to start thinking outside the box for once, before we have to fork out another 70 dollars.
Since the combat is still FPS, I like to play Skyrim. I would suggest you do get the Call of Duty games, and make sure you get Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and 3. They are a lot of fun
