Green Cleaning Treatments - Do They Do Their Job?
Do "green" solutions get the job done? In the last couple of years, it's been impossible to overlook the continual rise of anything "green", particuarly within the cleaning or maintenance industries. Even in unrelated fields, people are falling over themselves to display their "green" credentials (why, even the latest hollywood blockbuster brags about how many tons of carbon it has saved or offset). I have been carrying out work in Carpet Cleaning In Birmingham for over two decades and this is one of the leading changes over that timeframe. If we look deeper, what do we find?
To be considered seriously (and more importantly, to get used) they had to match their performance of existing chemicals.
In a "chicken and egg" situation, demand would have to increase before allowing economies of scale in production. Until this happened, it was always going to restrict their ability to cut into the market share of traditional products. Not only this but the price had to be brought somewhere in line with existing products. It was no good having a more desirable solution if it was not economically viable.
In the last few years new products have emerged which have totally swept away a lot of those previous disadvantages. The driving force behind it was unusual as it was the cleaners themselves, the ones who used them day in day out, who led the movement.
Rapidly increasing awareness of the users (and in fairness, more responsibility by manufacturers) has led to large leaps forward in technology and realistic pricing. Chemical companies had to quickly respond to this change of attitude. Unusually, all parties seemed to moving in the same direction (forward).
As usual people have looked at older technology in a new light. Have you ever heard the phrase “if you want a new idea, go read an old book”? Scientists have looked at old technologies and come up with surprising results. Check out the Nanoparticle Article for more details
The idea of going forward by looking back is prevalent in medical research. Many traditional remedies were found to have a good scientific grounding. For instance some herbs used in alternative medicine wee found to have strong natural steroids as their active ingredient. Things are never as new as you think they are.
Green cleaning is no different from anything else. One type of very effective green cleaner is based on technology being worked upon in the 1820s. There is historical evidence of it being known as long as a thousand years ago. It is called colloidal action.
Colloidal or nano particle cleaners are a classic example. Historians have found references dating back over a millenium, yet today they are at the vanguard of the green cleaning revolution. Simple tiny particles, suspended in water, move around at high speed break soiling down by mechanical rather than chemical action. Dirt, dust, bacteria and viruses all get broken up by this simple action. The only thing that has changed with modern science is the size of the particles. These have got smaller and smaller and so far more effective but the idea itself has not changed in centuries.
This approach is fantastic for cleaning of soft furnishings such as carpets, settees and sofas. If the water based particles are sprayed onto the item, they can stay in contact with the fibres for a while say twenty minutes or so. All of the time, those tiny particles are breaking up the dirt and other soiling. It’s not just cleaning that tales place though..
Earlier I mentioned the nano particles attacked organic matter. By this I meant odour causing bacteria and other sources of smells. By breaking down, rather than hiding a smell, colloids function as great deodorizers. You are looking at something that acts as a powerful cleaner as well as a deodorizer at the same time.
A further large benefit is the particles attack bugs like dust mites (or more to the point, their minute excrement). They also nullify things like pet dander that can trigger allergic reactions. That’s three separate functions, all in the same product. Oh, by the way, did I mention it’s green as well?
