Short List of Components For Electronics Kits

Electronics enthusiasts need to have the a variety or parts and tools for their projects. You will not be able to complete your project without them. It is not easy for electronics novices to choose which components to buy. It is good for you that most kits will contain the right components and also provide a list of tools needed. But if you want to design your own projects or adapt published projects, you’ll need to have a supply of available components.

Learn About Designing Custom Printed Circuit Boards

We’ve put together a list of some of the most common components you’ll need to have on hand. To buy all of them at the same time would make for a very expensive trip. Keep yourself stocked by purchasing one or two of these each time you are at the store buying other components or tools.

This isn’t an exhaustive list of everything you’ll need for every project. See this as a basic list of essential components that are used in the most common projects.

Printed Circuit Board Design Software
You can draw schematics by hand for custom projects, but you don’t have to. There are many free or inexpensive PCB design software programs available from the Internet.

Storing and Organizing
We cannot stress enough how important it is to stay organized. Every group of components should be clearly labeled, and in separate containers. A couple simple solutions are to have zipper top plastic bags with labeling or to have labeled cabinet drawers.

Resistors
It is common for electronics enthusiasts to have a drawer full of 4-band, 0.25W carbon film resistors. They are used often and don't cost much.

LEDs
10 each of red, yellow, and green 5mm standard LEDs

Battery Clips
You’re going to need power. Buy 3 clips for 9V PP3 batteries (and batteries).

Wire
You should buy some extra red, black, and one other color wire. About 10m of standard wire should do it. A common size would be 7/0.02 millimeter.

Switches
Many circuits can be assembled without switches, but if you want to use them, we recommend 3 each of push-to-make and miniature SPDT toggles switches.

Boards
There are a handful of options for your board. There are breadboards, stripboards and custom PCBs. the board that best fits your project will be decided by your overall skill and also the sophistication of the project at hand. A simplistic circuit with up to two integrated circuits usually require a breadboard. It is common to use stripboards for projects requiring skill of an intermediate level or for early prototypes. If you are creating a sophisticated design or completing your final prototype, you will want to use a custom printed circuit board. You will be the final judge who decides which board to choose.
