Zebrawood belongs to the 'Microberlina brazzavillensis' species and has several other names: Zingana, Amouk, Allenele, and African Zebrawood.. This tree has a diameter of 48 inches to 60 inches and is predominantly found on the banks of rivers.
Its heartwood reveals an extremely pale golden hue with thin very dark black and dark brown stripes. It has a very coarse texture and the pale color extends to the sapwood too. The wood does not take to preservative treatment so ends up being susceptible to pest attacks.
The grains of this very heavy hardwood are closely interlocked and clearly defined making it quite tough to carve or cut. The quartersawn wood is absolutely delightful to look at with its exuberant colors and diverse patterns. It also does not dry easily and exudes a rather foul odor when it is cut.
As the Zebrawood veneer is pretty fragile, an extra level of care and attention needs to be paid while handling it to prevent it from breaking. But it can be worked fairly well with the use of hand and power tools. A belt sander will give it a very smooth machine finish.
