How to Talk So Kids Will Listen to You

It's every parent's dream to have a well-disciplined child. And one part of teaching kids some discipline is by learning how to properly talk to them so they will listen. This is essential because how parents talk to their kids will teach them how to talk and interact with other people. And as we all know, the way we present ourselves and communicate with other people is an important part of our well-being.

So here is a very helpful guide so parents could learn how to talk to their kids poperly to ensure they understand what they are saying all the time:

1. Approace kids in a positive light whenever you want to talk to them. This is true even if you are telling them about the thingsthey have done wrong. Avoid using negative words such as "don't" and "never". One instance is when you want to let them know that running is not permitted in the house, so you say "running is for outside, walking is for inside", instead of "do not run inside the house".

2. If you want to talk to your kids and ask them to do something for you, it is always best to calm them down first. This is because it is easier to talk to them when they are emotionally settled.

3. Always address your child by their name when you are talking to them. This will make them feel more mature and that you are taking them more seriously, resulting to them respecting you more and listening to what you are saying.

4. Instead of making decisions for them, try helping them arrive to their decision once in a while. You can help by giving them choices. For instance, if you want them to clean up their room, you can give them the option to either put aways their toys first or straighten up their books.

5. You might not know this but kids hate being told what to do. So maybe you can rephrase your words when asking them to do something. Try using “I want” when making requests. For instance: "I want to see all your toys arrange properly". Doing this will play up their need to please you as their parents.

6. When telling them "No", you should be firm. Don't change your mind. This will help them learn about rules and how they should follow them. But always make sure that when you say “No” to them, you have a valid reason. And you should also be able to explain this reason to them properly.

7. Avoid using complex words when talking to them; but avoid talking to them like they are stupid. Stick with simple words that they can easily grasp. This way, they will know exactly what you are saying.

8. When asking them to do something a bit more complicated, it helps to have them repeat your instructions. This is to make sure that they really got what you just said. This will also give you a clue on what to expect from them.

9. When talking to kids, always use polite words. This way, you can teach them how to use these words when talking to you and other people.

10. Listen to your kids when they are talking. Communication between parents and children is not a one-way street. You should also know how to listen to them when they have something to say.
