As a student musician, I once auditioned for an advanced music class. The teacher considered not admitting me because I performed "off key."
I played intensively with a recording for six weeks.
After the recital, my teacher expressed amazement that I had remedied my pitch problem, and successfully performed a challenging piece, also. It was not only pitch accuracy that I learned from practicing with a recording. The recording had taught me to play at a specific tempo, and with a certain tone quality and a phrasing style I could not glean from the musical notation alone.
Before hearing the recording, my phrasing style was uncertain, and my tone undeveloped. The recording offered insight. It was the teacher at my side.
Piano Student "Practices" while Scrubbing Pots
Understanding the rewards of practicing with a recording, I taught an older beginner piano student who hoped to obtain a more classically oriented musical education than many "older beginner" piano courses allow. I suggested that she supplement the "adult short-cut" piano books with Shinichi Suzuki's piano course targeting children. (Suzuki's graded piano books and recordings are available for many instruments.)
Suzuki emphasized that achieving a good tone is fundamental to a successful musical education. Because tone cannot be seen in musical notation, he created a series of recordings to be studied along with the reading of musical notation. He chose selections which would build musicianship gradually, concept-by-concept. It is required that a student listen to the recording while studying each piece, and that a student study pieces in sequence.
My piano student listened in the process of performing housework, and practiced while reading music when time permitted. Although she didn't have much time, the time she had was used well.
She made steady progress and achievement over time. She did not lose interest, due to the beauty of the pieces, and was able to play well because she could hear the beautiful tone she should strive for. Naturally, she was encouraged by the thought that if children could do it, so could she.
While fostering a good performance by providing a recorded example, a karaoke machine can inspire a creative approach if the karaoke machine has the ability to alter three musical attributes: pitch, tempo, and tone. These three attributes of music enable a musician to carefully interpret a song and find the best adaptation of the song to his/her personality, voice, or ability level, so that the song is performed naturally.
Soprano Can't Hit Notes, Prefers Not To Sing
When I was young and in a choral group, I seemed to have a high voice, and so was assigned a soprano part. Unfortunately, I could not hit the really high notes, which resulted in my feeling dismay and insufficiency as a singer.
My musical inclination tended towards playing violin and piano. My small difficulty made a big difference in the direction of my studies.
As a sometime composer of vocal music, I try to keep vocal parts within a standard vocal range, and consider the need for vocal warm-up within a score to prepare for more difficult vocal passages.
Shy Musician Able To Perform When Tempo Is Changed
For some reason, I had an aversion to the song My Melancholy Baby (Burnett and Norton) until I heard a rendition by Diane Keaton in Woody Allen's film, Annie Hall. What caught my attention was the slowness of her rendition, which allowed her to explore depth of tone and mood.
It changed my opinion of the song.Since that experience, if called upon to participate as a musician in a family setting, where I might not really like the repertoire available, a simple choice of different tempo might be all that is needed to free up the performance from a prescribed style and adapt it to my capability and taste.
