San Pancho Top Secret Tourist Location on Mexican Riviera Nayarit
San Pancho, A City Where Nature and Culture Entwine
San Francisco, also lovingly nicknamed as San Pancho, is a pleasant, non-commercialized town in Riviera Nayarit. This warm town is a one-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta airport and is situated close to the mountainous Sierra Madre Occidental. San Francisco has beautiful, clear beaches and is covered with lush jungles swarming with jaguar, reptiles, bird species, and some exotic animals.
Brief history
Aboriginal tribes were considered to be the first people of San Francisco. The Spanish soon arrived in Mexico, and in 1524, the Spanish nicknamed the town San Francisco de Azapan. People began moving to San Francisco until its inhabitants grew. Until now, it kept its quaintness and appeal as a small, rural town.
The residents worked as fishermen and crop growers, following a rather traditional local lifestyle. Obviously, San Franciso lacked the grandiose of urban living, evidence to that is the residents’ humble palapa homes, which neither had electricity or water.
However in 1970’s, President Luis Echeverria have learned of San Francisco. In reality, he built his vacation home in the town, plus a hospital and a few schools. With this, he planned to make San Francisco as a independed town and a Third World community model. His proposals, however, ended as his term ended. But the town continued to take advantage from his efforts. And it gradually became the town of what it is at present.

Besides cowboys riding through the boulevards and history-wealthy pueblos that beautify the town, various art museums, displays, eateries, and tourist centers resonate with Mexican culture and traditions. The modernity of the times appears to skip San Francisco, as it goes on with its culture and history whole.
Art appreciation events are also celebrated in the town on a regular basis, for one to give nobility to artists and for another to sustain the artistic awareness of the population. Art expositions and displays, for instance, are put in various galleries in San Francisco. The town also observes a yearly music festival.
The presence of the Huichol Indians in San Francisco also adds to the town be more attractive. Their custom, community, skill, and art crafts and handmade crafts give a different appeal to the innate splendor of San Francisco.
