Karaoke Systems For Home Are as Feature-Rich as Each System's Karaoke-Enabling Component: the Karaoke Mixer

GoKaraokeMachine.com asked technical expert, Tony K., to summarize the components of a karaoke system. The 4-component system applies equally to karaoke systems for home and club settings.
Tony said: Take down notes in the next 5-10 minutes, and give it some thought. Examining an audio system that plays karaoke, it is essentially singing with music. So, just imagine what components you need. As in an ordinary audio system, you will have four components in karaoke systems for home.
Component #1: The Music Source (Player Source, Singer Source, Instrument Source)
The first component is a device that produces music. This is the (hardware) music source - a player. It could play a DVD, CD, or MP3. The player could be your ipod, iphone, laptop, MP3 player: anything that can play music by reading software, or a digital signal.
In this music source category, in karaoke there is also a music source which is a singer, for which the sound from the singer is changed into a signal by a microphone. The several types of signals from microphones is a subject in itself. A microphone is not usually needed in an audio system; however it is a necessary component of a karaoke system. To stay within the parameters of four components, it is simplest to consider it a music source, equal to a player.
GoKaraokeMachine.com adds that there could be a third music source which is an instrument.
The element in common between the microphone, the player, and the instrument music sources is the pickup, or transducer, which is only seen on a metal-stringed guitar instrument source, but is not seen in the player and microphone, and on an instrument source that is a keyboard.
Component #2: The Mixer (Containing Preamplifiers)
As the second component, Tony continues, you must have a device that is able to mix signals from your sound sources. A mixer boosts a signal power at a certain frequency into signal power at another frequency to make signal processing easier and also lower in cost.
By boosting several signals to a similar level, the mixer will mix music coming from the software source (the player), and the singer source (the microphone), and the instrument source (the instrument pickup).
One should recall that the mixer stands in the place which a preamplifier would occupy, which is between player and amplifier in a four-component audio system. The mixer actually includes a line of preamplifiers, and for each preamplifier there may be a connection from a music source.
In a karaoke system, the mixer is the device which provides adjustments for key changing, vocal cancel, effects processing, equalizing of individual instruments (whereas an equalizer operates system-wide), and echo.
Component #3: The Amplifier
Tony says an amplifier's job is to further boost the power of an electronic signal to match the specifications of a speaker. Using electrical power, it accepts a signal from the mixer, and then changes that signal into wattage (which is voltage, current, power measured in watts) further boosting that signal power which came from the music source by way of the mixer.
Component #4: The Music Producer (The Speaker)
Tony describes that an amplifier will send signal to a speaker and sound comes out. The speaker is making sound, but the sound comes from the amplifier. If the amplifier produces 100 watts, the speaker must be capable of producing 100 watts.
The speaker links to amplifier, amplifier to mixer, mixer to player. That series of connections makes a basic component system for karaoke.
A player, mixer, amplifier, and speaker may be comprised of 4 separate audio system components, or these components might be assembled into one big machine such as an all-in-one machine.
The four-component system may not be evident, but it is always there.
Tony says that you will always find these four components.
Technology will change. Not too long ago, people used cassette tapes and a cassette player. These days people use a CD or DVD player to play music. Or people use a laptop, iPod, or other MP3 player to play music. But these are all music sources, or players, the first of the four components in an audio system.
Sometimes we don't see that the player is connected to a mixer, because both mixer and amplifier could be contained in a single machine. Sometimes the amplifier is not visible, because the amplifier and mixer may be combined into a mixing amplifier, or an amplifier speaker. A preamplifier is frequently found in combination with an amplifier.
In essence, Tony says, that is what karaoke is: four basic components which receive signal, process, amplify, and produce sound.
