My music teaching career was cut short by a drastic cut of music programs from the school district. Fifty music teaching positions were eliminated after my first year. Many school districts have seen such budget cuts. These events have brought school budgets more in line with school funding, but also have caused music instruction to shift away from the public to the private sector.
Some children will not ask for music lessons when they believe their parents would be put under financial pressure to pay for them. Many potential students will solve the problem of paying for lessons by pretending lessons are not wanted, or are unnecessary.
But provide a child, or interested teenager or adult, a karaoke machine and possibly an instrument, and hidden interest in music may be brought to the fore. Using the inviting features of karaoke machines for kids or older musicians, a musical inclination can and will develop where there is interest. Karaoke can in this way assume part of the music-teaching burden where funding for private lessons, and a means to travel to lessons, may be unavailable.
Once a sincere interest in music is identified, a student will seek out opportunities to learn more. Much information is available on the web.
But even with a good start, music students need continued access to music and equipment, such as sheet music with CD, or karaoke music, or the equipment to slow down or change pitch or tempo of a CD. The expense of such items may be prohibitive. In anticipation of this problem, family and friends should note that a good way to build funds for music is contribution to a gift account by friends and family, so that music and equipment purchases may be made by the recipient of the gift, once enough funds are accumulated.
A student may request gift certificates while setting a limit on individual contributions, the musician can explore about equipment, and identify a desired music selection or piece of musical equipment, with confidence that eventually musical goals can be achieved, without presenting a financial burden to donors who want to further the musician's goals.
In these ways, a karaoke system may not only further self-teaching, and improve practice, but can also help identify and nurture an interest in music that might otherwise remain undiscovered or undeveloped in a family member.
