Designing Pipe Burners: The Four Fundamental Aspects of Combustion

Air Supply

Air supply is either primary or secondary; primary air is the air controlled by air shutters and pulled towards the mixer of the burner, while secondary air requires no adjustments and is pulled in the final combustion, also known as the flame.

Gas Supply

A pipe burner can only fully operate with sufficient supply of gas. Poised at the appropriate operating pressure, the piping of the gas supply should be able to provide a substantial volume of clean fuel. It is vital to also consider what the burner is designed for; for instance, a
propane pipe burner
must not be used with natural gas, while a natural gas burner cannot operate with propane. Burners often provide a manual that states the proper gas supply line sizing.

Head Space

This is the space between the base surfaces of the object being heated on top of the burner. Pipe burners require proper head space to make room for full flame combustion and for burner flames to be well-defined. Adequate head space is necessary to prevent contact between the inner cone of the flame and the surface being heated, because this may lead to incomplete combustion or gas leakage.

Venting

Combustion produces all kinds of gases that need to be properly expelled, with a required minimum of one square of venting for every 6,500 BTU’s of burner output. Otherwise, this will cause problems to the burner system. Aside from an adequate space, venting should also be un-obstructed to initiate a natural upward and outward flow.
