Old Radio Shows Writer and Producer Arch Oboler

Best known for his radio script work, Arch Oboler was a Chicago native who enjoyed many facets of his career. As an old time radio shows writer, he even produced and directed a range of shows, and also wrote books. He worked in all aspects of media from radio to film to television. In 1909, Arch Oboler was born in Illinois' Chicago. He kick started his writing career from a very young age, as early as high school he was selling radio scripts. The first time he was widely noticed was when he wrote a script that had Don Ameche and Mae West portraying Adam and Eve with a somewhat suggestive twist.

Perhaps because the show aired on a Sunday or perhaps because of its light treatment of the Bible, many listeners were outraged. The show caused quite a stir in old time radio. Mae West was even as far as banned from radio for many years because of her involvement in the show. Times, perceptions and attitudes have of course changed considerably since then, but it was clearly controversial in the era in which it originally broadcast. When the fury died down, Oboler was offered the show 'Lights Out', a series that featured scary stories for the brave listener. His namesake show 'Arch Oboler's Plays' was where he continued to scare everyone out there with a range of spooky chilling tales, from 1939.

In addition to his radio work, Oboler appeared in many theatrical productions and in film. Gangway for Tomorrow and Escape were just some of the movies that he starred in. He even directed films like Twonky and Bwana Devil. In the 1940s, Arch Oboler managed many political marches and so on. Returning to script writing, he wrote many shows and productions with an anti-nazi theme as the core focus. These pieces were so well-received that major Hollywood stars offered to act in his plays for union scale pay.

'Night of the Auk' and 'House on Fire' were evidence of Oboler's transition to large scale scripting, the former being a successful Broadway show, and the latter a novel. He enjoyed sci-fi and horrow, and even gave out his performances at perfect pitch. His work was often described as gruesome, but that didn't stop him from having millions of fans. In his lifetime, Arch Oboler's works always preceded him. It was somewhat controversial and always creatively delivered. His work was popular in the early 1930s and continued to remain popular throughout his career. As far as old time radio goes, it was Oboler's 'Lights Out' that outlived him, and can still be heard in syndication across old time radio stations. While he did pass away on 19th March, 1987, his work has certainly outlived him. He is a giant in old time radio shows and fans continue to love the terrifying tales he spun.
