Red Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is the national tree of the Philippines and is native to several parts of Asia like Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, and northern Australasia. It comes from the Pea Family (Fabacea or Leguminosae). It is known by various names all over the world; the most common names are Andaman Redwood, Angsana, Sena, Sonokembang, Tnug, Kaibocca Wood, Burmese Rosewood, and Asana.
The absolutely exquisite Amboyna Burl also comes from the same tree. The trunk of the tree measures about 2 m. in diameter and the tree grows really tall to a height of approximately 40 m.. On most of these trees, you can find several buttresses, extending upwards and outwards, surrounding the tree. It is a very heavy and hardwood.
In some places, the hardwood could exhibit a purple color but mostly it is colored a reddish orange, rose, or reddish tan. If you hold up a piece of this exotic wood to the sun, you will be able to discern the change in its appearance at different angles of light. Due to an inherent quality of the wood cells, this wood becomes a beautiful opalescent color when placed in water.
