It is also known by many different names in different parts of the globe: Asana, Burmese Rosewood, Kaibocca Wood, Tnug, Sonokembang, Sena, Angsana, Andaman Redwood, etc, are some of the more common names.

The absolutely exquisite Amboyna Burl also comes from the same tree. The trunk of the tree measures about 2 m. in diameter and the tree grows really tall to a height of approximately 40 m.. You will find on most of these trees, buttresses that extend upward and outward all around the tree. It is a very hard, dense, and heavy wood.

In some places, the hardwood could exhibit a purple color but mostly it is colored a reddish orange, rose, or reddish tan. If you hold up a piece of this exotic wood to the sun, you will be able to discern the change in its appearance at different angles of light. A substance that is naturally present in its wood cells, also make this wood turn a beautiful opalescent color when submerged in water.
