Do You Exercise Enough?

It is no secret that we all should exercise a lot more than we do right now. For most of us the grocery shopping is about the most exercise that we do all week. Yet exercise burns calories, helps to strengthen our bones and our heart and has a whole host of other health benefits, so why don't more people do it?

People tend to think of exercise as a really boring activity, which is why I think they avoid it so much, nobody wants to do anything boring unless they have to do they? The easy way to solve that is to stop thinking of exercise as going down to the gym to run on the treadmill or spend hours on the cycles, and instead find some fun ways to get active. Like taking classes at the gym, most gyms will have studios where they do all sorts of different activities from step aerobics to yoga and even dance classes. You still get to use the changing facilities etc like you normally would, but classes are so much more fun to do.

If you want to take things a step further then cut up your gym card and instead take some lessons into how to rock climb. That doesn't mean you have to get cold though, while you might think of rock climbing as an outdoor sport then actually there are indoor centers all over the place now where you can learn and enjoy the sport in relative comfort. The idea is to get you having fun while you exercise, because then it is no longer a chore and you will actually want to do it more often! So pick whatever activity interests you, badminton, bowling, hiking, anything that gets you up and active.

Something else you need to watch out for is starting off too quickly with whatever you choose. You really need to start off gently with whatever activity you choose, that way you can start to get a reasonable level of fitness back and stretch your muscles so you don't cause yourself an injury, then after a few weeks you can start to push as hard as you want. It is actually pretty easy to start acclimatizing your body to exercise, walking is a great way to stretch your leg muscles, get your heart rate up and let your body know you are going to start being more active, just buy a strapless heartrate monitor before you start to keep an eye on yourself. Most of us just slowly amble along, but if you crank it up a gear and start to walk faster then it really starts to get to you and you'll find your heart rate elevated and your starting to get out of breath in no time.

After a few weeks of that you should already have noticed you are getting much better at it and can go further and faster, that is your body starting to adapt. Once you notice that then it is time to start doing the activity you have chosen so you can take things to the next level.
