How To Make Exercise More Fun
It is no secret that we all should exercise a lot more than we do right now. For most of us the grocery shopping is about the most exercise that we do all week. Yet exercise burns calories, helps to strengthen our bones and our heart and has a whole host of other health benefits, so why don't more people do it?
The biggest hurdle that we have to try and get over is that people find exercise boring, and nobody is going to do something boring by choice any more than they have to. It is true that there are some very boring ways to exercise, using a stationary cycle at the gym is one that bores me rigid, but that is just one option, there are lots of really interesting ways to exercise if you look for them. For instance if you do like going to the gym because it has changing facilities etc then consider just doing classes instead, there are a huge range of different classes you can do now and they are a lot more fun than exercising by yourself.
Or you could cancel your gym card and start to look for other activities you can do which would be fun, like learning to rock climb. You don't need to go outdoors for rock climbing either, there are indoor centers all over the place which allow you to safely enjoy this sport without worrying about the weather and without all the fuss of having professionals to keep an eye on you. Or you could try something else like kayaking or more traditional sports like tennis and badminton, the difference is these activities allow you to exercise without it being boring so you are more likely to continue doing it.
Something else you need to watch out for is starting off too quickly with whatever you choose. If you don't do much exercise now then you can't just throw yourself into some intense activity and expect your body to cope with it, you need to start off small and build things up to give your body chance to adapt. One of the best ways to do that is by walking, grab yourself a heart rate monitor so you can see how hard you are pushing yourself and then get out there and start walking at a moderately fast pace for 30 minutes every few days. Check your heart rate before you leave and then while doing it and you want to make sure you are walking fast enough to make yourself slightly out of breath and really raise your heart rate up.
Make sure you stick to your new plan though, and if you do then within weeks your body will have started to strengthen itself and you'll find it easier to go faster and further. Once that happens then you are ready to start doing more intense exercise and you can find a club to join and start the new activity you have chosen.
