Roleplaying Dice Sets for Tabletop Gaming
War-gamers and roleplaying can buy all different types of
roleplaying dice sets
. You might say that all dice are the same. While all dice perform the same function, dice of different color patterns and opacity add a different mood to a game. I don't know how many gamers I've met who wanted to roll black dice, or whatever else their favorite color was. I've met roleplayers who wouldn't be caught dead rolling those transparent dice with all the pastel colors.
Even within a game, RPG participants tend to be superstitious about their dice. If you get three bad results in a row with th d20 you're using, a gamer is likely to start searching through the dice bag for a different d20 to change their luck. Just last week playing D&D, I went through about 4 different d20s in a session, because none of them seemed "hot". About all I could do was make my saving throws (a nice one to roll high on, I'll admit). But gamers don't roleplay just to survive--that's what life is about. We want to conquer and plunder.
Anyway, I wanted to discuss which dice you'll find in a comic book store or at an online RPG vendor, so you'll know what you want to buy.
Plastic Dice - These are the most common form of die, complete with pips in them. The "pip" is the indention in the face of the die. One indention represents "1". Six indentions represent "6". The precision dice used in casinos are made using cellulose acetate.
Acrylic Dice - Acrylic dice are the transparent or clear dice you'll see in the gaming store. These tend to be a number of bright colors, from blue to red to green to purple, but you can more or less see through them.
Crystal Dice - These are dice made of geometric crystals. They'll come in opaque or translucent varieties, and in many different shapes. The odd shapes (barrel dice) make them hard to read. You'll get used to it pretty quick, but you can confuse and bewilder the GM and other players.
Brushed Steel and Brass Dice - You'll even find metallic dice. These are rarer. You can find these online, often under names like "dwarven dice". An alterate version is the stone dice, made of a semi-precious mineral. The dwarven designation comes from the fantasy world dwarven peoples, who tend to live under mountains and mine their subterranean vaults. I know, we've descended into the realm of the uber-geek.
