The topic of financial aid isn’t a new one for many college students. Finding the money to fully cover the cost of tuition is difficult and most students don’t have the money saved up as incoming freshman. However, a thorough knowledge of types of student financial aid and how it works will make the process of applying easier, less time-consuming and less stressful.
Students have so many options when it comes to financial aid that helping get your tuition paid for shouldn’t be a challenge. The real difficulty comes in selecting the types of financial aid that will best suit your college needs. Grants, scholarships, student loans and work-study are all possibilities; you just need to understand your options in order to tailor them to your situation. The federal government is one of the best places to begin investigating financial aid options.
There are more than 600 financial aid programs available simply at the federal and state level. Nine federal programs are offered and 605 state aid programs, most of which are aimed at helping students who qualify based on financial need. Post-secondary institutions also offer financial aid for students, and this assistance is primarily merit-based, allowing students who may not be able to demonstrate financial need but could still benefit from help to earn financial aid.
In order to qualify for federal, state and institutional aid, students must prepare a FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students can file no earlier than January 1 for the upcoming academic year. The application can be filled by the student on the Department of Education’s website or the services of a professional aid advisory firm can be used.
The 2010 – 2011 academic year saw that FAFSA applicants were awarded approximately $168 billion in student aid – and the aid money is generally first come, first served, so the closer you are to January 1 when you fill out your application, the more likely it is you will qualify for funds. The FAFSA application covers roughly 130 questions, which pertain to household size, income, assets and other financial factors to determine your eligibility for aid.
The Expected Family Contribution is one of the most important factors when filling out your FAFSA. This number is determined by how much money your family will be contributing to paying for your college education, if any. College savings and pre-paid tuition plans are also covered in the EFC determination. The 130 questions, including the EFC, will help determine if you can be awarded need-based financial aid to assist with your tuition.
Federal financial aid, as well as state, institutional and private student aid, tends to follow a set group of types. The most well known financial aid are grants and scholarships, which don’t have to repaid after graduation, and include Pell Grants and SMART Grants. Student loans are also common types of financial aid and commonly undertaken by students who may not qualify for scholarships or grants – they include Stafford Loans and the Federal PLUS Loan. Student loans do have to be repaid after graduation, and usually accumulate interest that also has to be repaid. Finally, the federal government also offers work-study programs, which help provide students with jobs so that they can dedicate their earnings towards education expenses.
Billions of dollars are available to students who find that they need help paying for on-campus and online degree programs, so you truly aren’t alone when earning your degree if the fees seem insurmountable. Filling out a FAFSA may seem time consuming, but the opportunity and assistance available are worth the time it takes. The sooner you take the time to apply for financial aid prospects, such as academic scholarships, the closer you will be to having help for the cost of your degree – and with deadlines quickly approaching, sooner is better!
