Bhutan: The Land of the Thunder Dragon
When you hear about the Land of Thunder Dragon, you may not know where exactly this place might be. Located between India and China, Bhutan is a place of natural beauty with spectacular mountains, peaks and holy lakes. It gives people a chance to see nature in a whole different way: more than sixty percent is dense tropical jungle, while sixty miles away, visitors can see the south side of Bhutan, into the high and cold Himalayan Mountains.
Most people may not have heard of this place before, since it is tucked between Nepal and Tibet. Nevertheless, Bhutan still has its own character, where buying cigarettes is punishable by law and chilies are not just seasoning, but a dish in itself. Since the place has opened to tourism just recently, most foreigners that pass through Bhutan will need to pay for their trespassing, almost two hundred dollars a day.
There is a deep religious influence in the area. Visitors can see and appreciate Dzong architecture through the different sites situated in and around Bhutan. Greatly influenced by Buddhism, most sights seen in Bhutan reflect the principles of Dzong architecture, including the Paro Dzong, Jakar Dzong, Trashi Chhoe Dzong, and the Trashigang Dzong.
