String instruments are instruments that produce a melody (sound) by means of vibrating strings. Sounds from such instruments are emitted by varied methods such as plucking, using bow or striking. One of the most popular string instruments is the Violin. Violin is a fretless wooden instrument comprising of a spruce top, a neck and a bow. The spruce top is an hourglass shaped wooden structure from where the strings are suspended to its neck. The neck end of the violin is known as the peg box and is slightly curved with pegs suspended on both sides. A typical violin consists of four strings.
The highly pitched violin is one of the smaller instruments in the Violin family. Other instruments that belong to this family are the Cello and the Viola. Violin is played using a violin bow. A Violin player produces sound from the violin by drawing the violin bow across the strings by one hand and plucking the strings with the other. This technique produces a series of vibrations that are emitted in the form of different musical notes. The violin bow is a stick shaped structure on which a series of horse hair or a ribbon is suspended tightly on either side of the stick. This side of the bow is then struck to the violin to emit sounds. An artist who plays a violin is referred to as a ‘Violinist’ or a ‘Fiddler’.
Violin is used by musicians from various musical genres, including Indian classical music, jazz, folk music, rock and roll etc. Majority of the shops dealing in musical instruments are likely to have Violin in their merchandise. However, some shops also offer Violin rental for concerts and daily practice. Violin rentals are priced approximately at $25 per month to approx. $40 per month, for some costly violins. Violin rental is preferred by people as it gives them an opportunity to get accustomed to the instrument before investing it in.
The Viola is another string instrument from the Violin family. Though Violas are similar to Violin in material and construction, Violas are bigger in size than ordinary violins. The lengths of small violas for children typically start at 12 inches, while the bigger ones are 15inch to 18 inches in length. The sound of Violas is said to be a sound in the middle of a violin and a cello. Violas have a lower pitch range resulting in a deeper and mellower tone.
Violas use bows made from horse hair that are wider than a violin bows. Also, the viola strings are heavier than that of a violin resulting in violas producing sounds at lesser speed than violin. A viola player is referred to as a ‘Violist’ or simply as a viola player. The technique of playing violas differs from that used to play violin because violas are bigger instruments than violin and hence the notes are spread out. Often violists use wider-spaced fingerings, wider and more intense vibrato etc. for ease of playing the instrument.
