'I'd Say That Our Parents Instilled Plenty Of Doggedness Into Us From A Young Age,' Ryan Follese, Lead Vocalist Of The Band, Asserts In Response To How They Have Managed To Keep Going For 6 Years.
If you hear national radio stations, probabilities are you've heard the tune "Tonight, Tonight" by Hot Chelle Rae.
"Just do not stop, let's keep the beat pumpin' / Keep the beat up, let's drop the beat down / It's my party, dance if I want to / We will get mad, let it all out" the lyrics go. A jovial song for a band that has needed to work conscientiously for the previous 6 years.
"I'd say that our elders instilled a lot of determination into us from a young age," Ryan Follese, lead vocalist of the band, says replying to how they have managed to keep going for 6 years.
"Our family has a really strong work ethic," he adds, "My folks are both musicians. So we know the deal. We are individuals who set targets and that helps."
His father is singer and songwriter Keith Follese, who is known for his work with country music legends like Religion Hill, Tim McGraw and Martina McBride.
Their backbone has paid off. Nominated for an American Music Award (which they have subsequently won), Hot Chelle Rae has finally arrived. "I can't truthfully tell you what being nominated feels like," Follese says . "We're still processing it.
"To be in a class with such great artists really makes us feel just like we are a part of the industry," he adds.
As a band they've been globetrotting and are chatting to me from Sweden in transit to Paris, where they will no doubt be playing for a bunch of Western european fans who know the words to all their songs.
"I can't truthfully say that I ever thought that I might be sitting in Sweden talking with a journalist in South Africa," he asserts responding to whether they thought they'd ever have fans in South Africa.
"It's actually flattering and humiliating. We have an extraordinary team and that's why this works out so well. And our label works as hard as we do."
Their goals include selling 1,000,000 albums and turning into a fully-fledged arena band.
The past year has been critical on the band's time line and evolution.
"Everyone's gotten better," Follese says . "In the year all of the emotions feel intensified. We are away from home a good deal. The parties became better. Everything is just more intensified."
Funny what a little success will do. So what is the silliest party they have been to? "I must say the "I Like it Like That" music promo is one of the crazier parties we created," Follese claims.
The music promo was shot the day they got their hands on the first copy of their approaching album, Whatever.
"We started drinking and partying," Follese says . "And our manager brought out a camera and it's fundamentally us murdering 2 bottles of Grey Goose. It was a massive outlining moment for us."
Keeping the momentum going is always one of the trickiest things for a new band. "We just released the new single 'I Like it Like That'. We have the imminent album. And essentially everything on it is simply a journey in our lives and the ride we've been on."
"Absolutely," he responds to a question about whether they'd tour South Africa "One of my friends was born in S. A. . Apparently, the girls are really beautiful."
Watch out women!
With a gruelling tour schedule and heaps of travelling, "we spend a lot of our sparetime with family," he asserts, "And watching flicks and hockey. We chill."
This year has been especially travel-heavy with the band spending as little as two or three days out of each 3 months at home. The travelling doesn't appear to affect his long-term relationship though.
"She's not on tour with me. We've been together so long though, that she knows what's up. We both know that this is bigger than us now."
The band cites some of music's greats as their influences. Queen and The Beatles are among them and are right up there with their mum and dad. "They're our number one supporters," Follese isn't shy to admit.
The Follese brothers aren't the sole members with ties in the entertaining industry. Lead guitar player Nash Overstreet is from a performing family and his bro Chord is one of the new leads on the Glee block. "Chord's parallel career trail has been so cool to see," Follese says, "Being on Glee for us would show that we've actually made it. It would be the definition of full circle", writes tagza.com.
