It is also known by many different names in different parts of the globe: Asana, Burmese Rosewood, Kaibocca Wood, Tnug, Sonokembang, Sena, Angsana, Andaman Redwood, etc, are some of the more common names.
The same tree produces the breathtaking Amboyna Burl. The tree grows to a height of about 40 meters and has a trunk that measures 2 meters in diameter. On most of these trees, you can find several buttresses, extending upwards and outwards, surrounding the tree. It is a very hard and heavy wood.
The hardwood in some places is somewhat purple in color but the most common colors are reddish tan, rose, and a deep orange red. If you hold up a piece of this exotic wood to the sun, you will be able to discern the change in its appearance at different angles of light. A substance that is naturally present in its wood cells, also make this wood turn a beautiful opalescent color when submerged in water.
