Red Narra (Pterocarpus indicus) is the national tree of the Philippines and is native to several parts of Asia like Vietnam, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, and northern Australasia. It comes from the Pea Family (Fabacea or Leguminosae). Burmese Rosewood, Tnug, Sena, Andaman Redwood, Asana, Kaibocca Wood, Sonokembang, and Angsana are some of the more common names of the Red Narra.
The same tree produces the breathtaking Amboyna Burl. The height of the tree is about 40 m. and the width of the trunk spans some 2 m. All around the tree, you will on many occasions find buttresses extending outwardly and upwards. It is a very heavy and hardwood.
The most common colors of the hardwood are deep orange red, rose, reddish tan, and in some places it is even said to be purple. At different angles, when held up to light, a piece of this wood reveals a marked change in appearance. Due to an inherent quality of the wood cells, this wood becomes a beautiful opalescent color when placed in water.
Red Narra Wood is best for wood inlay work as it has a rich color and the ability to take a high level of polishing, and the grain and beautiful colors are quite unmatched by any other timber.
